Christmas concertos were very popular and performed during the festivities in Italy. Corelli’s concerto, commissioned by Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni, one of his influential patrons, is one of a set of twelve Concerti Grossi. The Pastorale from the Christmas Cantata by Scarlatti is one of the most popular Christmas works of the baroque era. It is filled with beautiful pastoral references sung by soprano Ailish TynanCorelli and Scarlatti were employed by the exiled Swedish Queen Christina bearing out our Scandinavian theme.

The Fiddlers is a fabulous ode to folk music, based on old Finnish traditional tunes.  Rautavaara extracts a vast amount of variety and emotional nuance from them, using the basic material in surprising ways. Grieg’s romantic songs mirror his artistic and personal development more intimately than any of his other music. Ailish Tynan sings a selection of love-songs, many of which were written for Grieg’s wife, Nina.  His much-loved Holberg Suite, recalling musical styles and forms from the past, is one of Grieg’s crowning achievements. Ailish Tynan infuses one of Sweden’s finest Christmas carols, Koppangen with passionate fervour. In Scandinavia, St. Lucia’s Day (13 December) marks the beginning of the Christmas and the celebration of light begins with the beautiful Sankta Lucia. Oh Holy Night is just the icing on this Christmas cake!
