FAQs

Revenue's Charitable Donation Scheme lets ICO reclaim tax you have already paid, on top of your gift. If you donate €250 or more in a year, ICO can claim a refund from Revenue. It costs you nothing extra. All you do is sign one form.

Revenue grosses your donation up at the specified rate of 31%, which adds about 45% to its value. A €250 gift lets ICO claim around €112 back, making it worth about €362. A €1,000 gift is worth about €1,449.

It is the form that lets ICO claim the relief. Sign it once and it covers your donations for five years, so there is no new form each year. It does not commit you to giving anything. ICO can only claim in years where your donations reach €250.

No. You do not tell ICO what you earn, how much tax you pay, or whether you are PAYE or self-assessed. We only need the details on the form.

Yes. Your details are used only to claim the relief and are shared only with Revenue for that purpose. Your PPS number is treated as sensitive personal data. See our privacy policy for how we store and protect it.

That is fine. You can sign a separate certificate for each charity you support. ICO only claims on the donations you make to ICO.

Yes, at any time. Just let us know and we will stop claiming from that point.

It is on your public services card, payslip, P60, or any letter from Revenue or the Department of Social Protection. You can also find it through Revenue's myAccount.

There is a four year limit on claims. If you donated €250 or more in any of the last four years, ICO may be able to claim on those gifts. Choose the earliest qualifying year as your first year on the form. If you are unsure, email us and we will help.

The scheme is open to anyone who pays Irish income tax or capital gains tax. That includes self-employed people, and retired people with a pension, investments or other taxable income.

If you have any questions, email icoaccounts@ul.ie and our team will be glad to help.
