Jörg Widmann   Principal Guest Conductor/ Clarinet

Mendelssohn     String Symphony No. 3
Mozart               Clarinet Quintet
Widmann           Jagdquartett
Mendelssohn     String Symphony No. 7

Widmann continues his mission performing Mendelssohn Symphonies and other prodigious works.  Nowhere is the composer’s precocity more evident than in those early lost sparkling Sinfonias written at circa 14 years and only re-discovered in Berlin in 1950. Symphonies No. 3 and 7 make their scintillating way through a fertile field of merry fast movements and atmospheric, thoughtful andantes.
They book-end the programme and are performed by small groups of musicians allowing you to get to know them more intimately.

Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet was the fruit of a long friendship and a love both for the instrument and its player, Clarinetist Anton Stadler.  With the skillful handling of the most fluid chamber textures, Mozart conjures solo arias, duets, dances and choruses from an ample cast of five.

Widmann follows this with his own Jagdquartett (Hunt Quartet), his third written in 2003.
After a short signal cry from the performers, there are the familiar strains of Schumann’s Papillons Op. 2, which carry through this masterpiece.  It is rough wild and exciting, brimming with energy as the ICO traverses fields and forests of notes reaching a climactic, killing conclusion.  From the hunt to the chase, to the whip cracking final shot, this gallop will have you chomping at the bit!
