Meet our new Artist in Association

Sharon carty

Sharon carty

We're delighted to announce acclaimed Irish Mezzo Soprano Sharon Carty as our inaugural Artist in Association for the 23/24 concert season.

Irish mezzo-soprano Sharon Carty is a singer who has firmly established a reputation as a respected interpreter of both early and contemporary works, alongside maintaining a busy schedule in mainstream opera and concert repertoire.

Sharon will perform twice in our 2023/24 season, showing further facets of her artistic personality as she captivates her audiences with her enthusiasm and technical brilliance. She will also undertake singing workshops with our young ICO Schools students during her association with us. This will provide the schools and students with the experience of working collaboratively with a professional singer in the classroom.

In February 2024, Sharon will perform Deirdre Gribbin’s emotive song cycle, The Stones of Life, which was an absolute hit when premiered at The Kilkenny Arts Festival. Gribbin’s son Ethan Stein, a young poet with Down Syndrome wrote the lyrics, and Sharon sings this remarkable mother-and-son’s journey. She also performs Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen, one of Mahler’s most beautiful and moving songs.

As Artist in Association, I have a wonderful opportunity to get to know the orchestra, a new audience, a community and find ways to be helpful within it. I’m looking forward to exploring these connections and being of artistic service to the orchestra, its music lovers, and to making great music with ICO

This new initiative allows us to raise the curtain on an enriching collaborative relationship while at the same time offer opportunity to our incoming associate artist. Its explicit aim is to create new artistic inspiration and develop long-term partnerships through more in-depth, shared music-making. This residency will provide valuable time and resources for Sharon to further develop her practice which we look forward to sharing with our audiences over the 23/24 concert season
