Meet the Musician
Meet the Musician is an ICO Schools workshop, where ICO Musicians engage with, demonstrate to and perform for children in partnering schools.
Irish Chamber Orchestra’s innovative ICO Schools (formally Sing Out With Strings) programme has been providing free weekly music sessions for children in Limerick’s inner city since 2008. Evolving from a creative response to the City’s Regeneration programme and inspired by the El Sistema programmes, ICO Schools collaborates with national schools to provide over 100 hours of weekly singing, song-writing and string instrumental string tuition to 350 children. Participants also perform at events at events in prestigious venues and festivals around the county and beyond making music an integral part of their lives.
The programme is fully immersive within the schools’ curricula, with every child availing of free lessons. Its delivery depends entirely on public support. Read here about the different ways that you can make a difference in a child’s life..
Beyond our partnering schools, we also deliver Meet the Musician workshops as part of our bespoke corporate partnership opportunities. The focus of a recent Meet the Musician workshop was "How to Bake a Musical Cake" and was delivered by Irish Chamber Orchestra Principal Clarinet, Katherine Spencer to children at Unikids, Limerick, one of our local partners.
Keeva (pictured below) first met Katherine Spencer as part of this partnership, where she shared her love for music and especially, the tin whistle. After our January concert, Keeva was able to join Katherine with her tin whistle on stage at UCH. Thank you to Unikids for their continued support and to Katherine for making this workshop such a special one.
