Schubert String Quartet No. 14 in D minor, D 810 (arr. Mahler) – Death and the Maiden
John Dowland wrote seven variations on his song Flow, My Tears for a five-part consort. These gorgeous tunes highlighted ground-breaking counterpoint and we hear the first, Lachrimae Antiquae. Two delightful dances illuminate the programme book-ending Ruth Crawford Seeger’s mesmerising Andante for Strings. Air and Dance by Delius is a simple-textured piece in one movement with the Dance evolving naturally out of the Air. Debussy’s shimmering and sensuous Danse Sacrée et danse profane is one of the finest works for harp and strings. The concert climaxes with Schubert’s Death and the Maiden, as death’s shadow stalks the composer, this iconic work combined with the sheer energy of ICO’s music-making, touches the heart.
