The Irish Chamber Orchestra is currently seeking string teachers for their exciting community outreach initiative, ‘Sing Out with Strings.’ The following posts are available in Limerick City:

Cello Tutor

This position entails working as a member of a small, dedicated team of string tutors in  primary schools in Limerick City. The successful applicant will work closely with the Education and Outreach Manager and fellow tutors, to deliver group cello lessons and assist in the running of afterschool orchestra and after-school cello ensemble up to three afternoons per week.

The successful applicant will have the following skills / experience:

  • Educated to degree level in Music / Music Education / Community Music OR equivalent in experience
  • Of excellent standard on cello
  • Demonstrable skills in group instrumental teaching
  • Experience in foundation string teaching, preferably in Suzuki method. Applicants with experience in Dalcroze and Kodaly are particularly welcome
  • A strong understanding of and commitment to the ethos of community music as a practice and the aims of the Sistema movement

Hours: Tuesday 10:00 – 15:30, Wednesday 14:00 – 16:30 and Friday 17:30 – 19:30 subject to review.

Salary: Hourly rate of €35

 

Cover Musician (Violin/Viola/Cello/Double Bass)

Cover musicians enable Sing Out With Strings to continue to deliver a high quality musical experience in the event that a musician is on leave or unwell. Cover musicians will be required to carry out a variety of roles including supporting of leading group sessions, teaching in both large and small groups, taking orchestra sectionals and being able to quickly slot into a group of musicians and work effectively as a member of that team.

The successful applicant will have the following skills / experience:

  • Educated to degree level in Music / Music Education / Community Music OR equivalent in experience
  • Of excellent standard on their respective string instrument/s
  • Demonstrable skills in group instrumental teaching
  • Experience in foundation string teaching, preferably in Suzuki method. Applicants with experience in Dalcroze and Kodaly are particularly welcome
  • A strong understanding of and commitment to the ethos of community music as a practice and the aims of the Sistema movement

Hours: Variable, as required.

Salary: Hourly rate of €35

Sing Out with Strings is a community outreach initiative, inspired by the Venezuelan programme, ‘El Sistema.’ Sing Out with Strings works specifically with schools in Limerick’s regeneration areas, and has a central focus on using music to benefit children personally, socially and academically. We are specifically seeking teachers who are not only highly skilled musically, but who have the passion, energy and enthusiasm needed to inspire and encourage young children.

Typical teaching hours are Monday to Friday 09:00 – 17:00 and Friday 17:30 – 19:30 with ICOYO on a weekly basis. In the lead up to performances, you will be expected to work outside of these hours.

Candidates who can teach both violin and cello to a high standard are very welcome. Depending on the skill set of successful candidates, the scope of these roles may be adapted accordingly.
