Bach’s heart-rending Concerto for Two Violins in D minor BWV 1043 featured  in the movie Children of a Lesser God. As his favourite piece of music plays in the background, teacher (William Hurt) struggles and grimaces. He is fluent in sign language, but in this situation no physical gesture is adequate and he finds himself making hopelessly clumsy movements. He loves the deaf girl (Marlee Matlin) and wants desperately for her to be able to share an experience which means so much to him.   Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins illustrates the immediate emotional impact which this music would have on cinema audiences. Its ineffable beauty is singled out for special praise by commentators, among them Tovey who says that ‘nowhere has Bach written music with a more irresistible appeal to personal affection’.  Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro for Strings, Op. 47, is a virtuosic masterpiece.   Souvenir de Forence  was composed while Tchaikovsky lived in Florence.  It illustrates Tchaikovsky’s passionate, songful, flirtatious, and beguiling composition style was written for two violins, two violas and two celli.  In Tchaikovsky’s own letters, he admitted that composing the sextet was extremely difficult and was unsure if he was even capable of completing the commission. Luckily for music lovers, he did!

Little needs to be said of the Pachelbel very popular Canon, which is arguably the most identifiable piece of Baroque music in existence.  Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro for Strings, Op. 47, is a virtuosic masterpiece.  Souvenir de Forence was composed while Tchaikovsky lived in Florence.  It illustrates Tchaikovsky’s passionate, songful, flirtatious and beguiling composition.  In Tchaikovsky’s own letters, he admitted that composing the sextet was extremely difficult and was unsure if he was even capable of completing the commission. Luckily for music lovers, he did!  Irish composer’s Ian Wilson’s  “In fretta, in vendo”was written in 2001.
