WUNDERKIND

Irish Chamber Orchestra
Jörg Widmann Principal Guest Conductor /Clarinet

Mendelssohn Sinfonia No. 1, C major
Weber Clarinet Quintet in B flat major, Op. 34, J182 arr. for String Orchestra
Widmann 180 Beats Per Minute for String Sextet
Mozart Symphony No. 41, C-major Jupiter

“The audience was soon basking in the radiant glow of Widmann’s musical brilliance …….Widmann’s daring and intriguing choice deserves credit as does the sharp and energetic performance of the Irish Chamber Orchestra. The audience truly appreciated a winning debut.” Sunday Business Post

Widmann continues his schedule to programme all the Mendelssohn symphonies over the next five years. Mendelssohn’s extraordinary precocity is nowhere more evident than in his early Sinfonias, where the range of invention far exceeds what might be expected of even so prodigiously talented a boy. He was eleven years old when he completed his first Sinfonia and composed another six in the same year! Often compared to the other Wunderkind, it is no surprise that Mozart’s stunning Jupiter features. Its Olympian character is radiantly clear in the commanding emphasis of its terse opening strokes, maintained to the greatest of all Mozart’s symphonic finales. Between these two great works we feature the exciting sounds of Jorg Widmann, Principal Guest conductor, clarinettist and composer. Ever-versatile, he performs in Weber’s dramatic Clarinet Quintet in B flat major, Op. 34, J182, written by another 25-year-old wunderkind and showcases one of his own eclectic compositions, 180 Beats Per Minute for String Sextet.
