Since 1921, Germany’s oldest Mozart Festival has been held in the Würzburg Residence Palace. 25,000 attend more than sixty top class orchestral and chamber concerts with internationally renowned artists.

Mozart’s Don Giovanni Overture suggests an impending tragedy, but the music evolves into something quite magnificent. His Serenade No.12 for Winds is a glorious masterpiece, an extraordinary work exhibiting the characteristics of a Sturm und Drang symphony. Inspired by Haydn, Mozart later revisited the work, scoring it for string quintet (KV 406). Mendelssohn’s obsession with Bach’s counterpoint inspired Widmann’s own Attempt at a Fugue for Soprano & Orchestra. The ICO and Stuttgarter Kammerorchester commissioned the re-scoring of his Quartet, which has been recorded by the ICO with Mojca Erdmann. Though numbered three, the Scottish was actually the last of Mendelssohn‘s five mature symphonies, completed in 1842. Within the rugged ruins of Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh, Scotland, he found his inspiration.
