Schubert           Salve Regina D676

Schubert           String Quartet in D minor D810 Death and the Maiden

Pergolesi’s musical career spanned only six years, during which he produced liturgical music of astounding beauty. His exquisitely emotive Salve Regina, with soloist Ailish Tynan, is pure in tone, expressive and poignant.

Haydn’s The Seven Last Words of Christ opens with a solemn Introduction, a movement suffused with sorrow and beauty based on the Crucifixion. The final sonata underscores the momentousness of the close of Christ’s life as the Earthquake heralds the Resurrection.

Schubert’s church music is among his finest. He set the Latin Salve Regina no less than 4 times during his short life. In the setting performed by Ailish Tynan, the music progresses from veiled grief to genuine tragedy.  Mozart’s Kommet her ihr frechen Suender is based on Psalm 66 and presents a bereft mother, Mary at the foot of the cross as her son is being crucified.

Schubert’s electrifying Death and the Maiden is one of the pillars of the quartet repertoire bringing together his two talents: his natural instinct for melody and song.
