The brilliant Jörg Widmann is an award-winning composer, performer and professor of music, his works have been recorded by some of the contemporary music scene’s leading labels and performed by respected instrumentalists.  He has constant media attention and has a vast following of listeners to his oeuvre, which extends from opera, chamber music, to orchestral works and solo instrument compositions. Several clarinet concertos have been dedicated to and premiered by him.  Widmann has forged quite a name for himself as a brilliant performer particularly of contemporary works for clarinet.  He first worked with the Irish Chamber Orchestra in 2007 and went on to take Berlin by storm with them that same year. Widmann has continued to work with the ICO, developing a special synergy with the ensemble and, now as Principal Guest Conductor/ Artistic Partner, has embarked on ambitious programming for the coming years.

Mozart’s Jupiter with its Olympian character has the greatest of symphonic finales. Written in six weeks when he was sad, broke and in debt, this revolutionary work is exuberant, introspective, charming yet complicated and a great challenge for any orchestra. Widmann demonstrates his versatility as clarinettist performing Weber’s dramatic Clarinet Quintet in B flat major, Op. 34 for String Orchestra, written for the celebrated clarinettist, Heinrich Bärmann. He presents two of his own compositions Insel der Sirenen (Island of the Sirens) for Violin and String Orchestra, which is a kaleidoscope of sonic brilliance, with Katherine Hunka (ICO Leader) as featured soloist. Widmann performs his virtuosic Fantasie, inspired by commedia dell’arte, which has been described as ‘the most beautiful circus music ever written’.
