Gershwin Lullaby Arrangement for String Orchestra
Musical giants Gershwin, Bernstein, Barber and Adams feature alongside Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla. Bernstein’s 1957 West Side Story featured a string of established classic hits, including Maria, Somewhere and the rousing but brilliant America.
The piece that crystallised John Adams’ creative world was Shaker Loops. Radical and minimalist, this shimmering and scintillating music has mass appeal. Barber’s Adagio for Strings is one of the most loved yet solemn and evocative pieces of American music. The Adagio has been called upon to serve in times of great emotion or at funerals of American dignitaries including Bernstein. Piazzolla’s development of tango music is notable for brilliant, original and likeable orchestration. His Four Seasons of Buenos Aires is a vivid sequence in which the changing moods of the seasons are expressed by means of an almost limitless emotional range and depth. Gershwin wrote his Lullaby for strings at 21. It is a simple, beautiful song without words and the composer’s only piece for strings. AMERICA is an imaginative postcard of iconic music.
