Gábor Tákacs-Nagy and the Irish Chamber orchestra present a very special Haydn project as Gabor selects landmark chapters from Haydn’s life which he shares with audiences over the coming seasons.  At thirty, Haydn began a lifelong relationship with the wealthiest of Hungarian nobility, the Esterhazy family, where he spent the next 30 years of his life as vice-Kapellmeister.

Celebrated Hungarian cellist István Várdai was last year’s winner of the Prix Montblanc, an international award for rising young stars.  He performs Haydn‘s infamous C major Concerto, composed during this Esterhazy period and only rediscovered in 1961. Described as “the single greatest musicological discovery since the Second World War”, it is full of fire and spirit.

The music of CPE Bach greatly inspired Haydn and Bach’s Cello Concerto in A is a real gem.  It offers Vardai plenty of clever challenges in the fast movements, while providing a slow movement of astonishing expressive intensity that transcends time, place, and stylistic formality. Pulsing rhythms and a wealth of dynamic contrasts grab and sustain the listener’s interest throughout.

Book-ending this stunning programme are two of Haydn’s most celebrated symphonies. No.  49 La Passione (his only F minor symphony) and No. 52 in C minor, rank with the most emotionally tense works of his Sturm un Drang period and their eruptive moods and jagged rhythms play directly to the ICO’s strengths.
