The Irish Chamber Orchestra dedicates this concert to the 1916 Easter Rising commemorative celebrations with an emphasis on remembrance.  Now in his 81st year, renowned actor Des Keogh explores this period of Irish history presenting a nostalgic pot-pourri of music, song and poetry.

John Kinsella’s The Splendid Years was commissioned in 1991 and premiered at the Harcourt Hotel in Dublin.  Themes of love, loss and transience dominate this poignant programme. Sir Arnold Bax’s In Memoriam was first performed in 1918.  Bax was capable of evoking an image through an understated use of harmony and tonal colour in this tribute.  In Memoriam pays homage to Ireland, a country Bax held dear. The traditional theme by the horn accompanied by languid chords of the harp, sets a wistful mood that avoids sentimentality. Bax creates an almost cinematic evocation of a particular time and place.  Roger Doyle’s Steal a Kiss is a slow evocative work while Sam Perkin’s arrangement of the The Foggy Dew is a reflective work dedicated to Thomas Kent.
